Ours is a country rich in evocative and wonderful places, steeped in history and knowledge. Without a doubt, especially as a child, we let ourselves be carried away by the emotion of the fables about the famous Knights of the Round Table.
But who were these famous knights? We remember them linked to the legend of King Arthur: they are stories of virtue, courage, passion. Symbol of equality and peace. Men of honor who followed a very specific code of conduct.
They had only one mission, which was to go in search of the Holy Grail. But that’s not all, because you will remember that linked to the name of the knights there is also the presence of the famous sword in the stone. What if I told you that it’s not only fiction, but that there is also some in Italy?
Tuscany, Abbey of Galgano: the mystery of the sword in the stone. Origins and history
Yes, the sword in the stone is not only a beautiful cartoon but it is also part of our reality. We can find it inside the suggestive Hermitage of Montesiepi in Tuscany.

The hermitage is located inside the ruins of the Abbey of San Galgano, where, according to what appeared, the saint lived in 1170, deciding to lead an isolated life. The infamous Sword of Stone stands inside the hermitage. As in the movie, many ventured into the arduous (like impossible) task of extracting it.
Let’s retrace the history of this sword: it is said, in fact, that it belonged to the knight Galgano Guidotti who led a life full of pleasure and entertainment in his youth. It was only later, when he set foot in the neighborhood of Montesiepi, that he decided to completely change his habits.
Legend has it that the nobleman decided to drive his sword into stone, creating a kind of cross where he can kneel to pray every day. Research then confirmed that the manufacture of the sword dates back to 1100, giving even more credence to this story.
