A “ghost” fish has been observed 8,145 meters deep in the Mariana Trench, the “deepest” creature ever seen. It’s a liparidae, a fish that could be part of a new species.

The sighting took place on December 6 during the 14th expedition by researchers from the Schmidt Ocean Institute. The researchers were examining video of a lure around which several deep-dwelling fish circled.

The sighted fish, about fifteen centimeters long, moves its fins covered with useful sensors in search of food. This liparid has an appearance that resembles a tissue tossed on the seabed.

Discovered in the abyss, this fish sets a new record

The body of this fish is transparent and reveals its internal organs.

Researchers recorded it five hundred meters deeper than the fish that previously held the record for the lowest filmed specimen as well as fifty-five meters higher than the depth at which the limit is thought to exist. which a fish can survive.

Indeed, below 8,200 meters, in theory, the body of a fish is incapable of producing osmolytes. These are chemicals that can help cells withstand the pressures reached at these depths.

However, experts were unable to take this fish to examine it and give it a scientific name.

In fact, the specimen passed in front of the camera, without being interested in the bait, going further.

This is not the first time that liparids have been seen at very significant depths, between 6,500 and 7,500 meters in the Kermadec trench, near New Zealand, and in the Japan trench.
