A few days ago, those responsible for the bathing establishments of Salento sounded the alarm over the proliferation of numerous luminous jellyfish on the shores and in the waters of the Ionian Sea, making bathing impossible.

This caused a lot of inconvenience not only to the customers, but also to the owners of the bathrooms, who had to collect them and dispose of them with special nets. The scholars, however, wanted to reassure the population, explaining that this massive presence was only due to a higher temperature in the Mediterranean, but that it would be a simple passing flow.

Now, however, another region of the country is infested with jellyfish, albeit of a different species. And it is feared that the Portuguese Caravelle can also be added to it, which like the “colleague” can nevertheless be very dangerous for humans. Suffice it to say that a lady bitten by one recently ended up in intensive care in Catania.

Jellyfish: area of central Italy infested by these animals

Tuscany, from Versilia to Livorno, is invaded by these animals. Biologist Silvio Nuti, founder of the Cetacean Research Center of Viareggio, explained the reason for this phenomenon. “This phenomenon usually occurs in the second half of August. The water reached 29 degrees, a subtropical temperature rather than a Mediterranean climate,” he told Corriere della Sera.

The calm, warm seas have favored the massive arrival of these fascinating creatures, also helped by the small number of marine predators such as turtles and puffers, which usually feed on them. Among the jellyfish currently infesting Tuscany are the Pelagia Noctiluca and the so-called Lung of the Sea.

The fear is that the Caravella could also arrive in the Tuscan sea, after a sighting in Chiavari, near Genoa in recent days. The biologist Fabrizio Serena did not exclude it: “The possibility that they arrive in Tuscany is there. It would be a first time.”
