More and more efforts are being made to channel all resources and technologies into systems that require renewable energy. The investments are numerous and reach unimaginable figures, but for the moment this type of path is still long and particularly tortuous.

However, various encouraging news are coming from the world that lead us to assume that we are heading in the right direction. The revolutionary discovery comes from a very young team of Finnish researchers who patented a sand battery. What is it about?

As mentioned, the need for greener living that uses renewable energy is increasingly desirable. A substantial contribution comes from Finland with the sand battery.

The development of this ambitious new project comes directly from a group of very young engineers: Tommi Eronen and Markku Ylönen who invented and built a sand battery. This particular device does not use lithium like regular batteries, just regular sand.

What is it really about? We are in the presence of a sort of huge cylinder made up of a specific insulating material. Inside this imposing structure we can find electrical resistances and, obviously, sand. About 100 tons.

What’s going on inside? It is a very simple process: the resistors we have talked about are heated by the excess current that was previously produced by the photovoltaic panels or in any case by other renewable sources.

In this way the sand inside the maxi cylinder reaches a temperature of 500° and this heat will then be returned, especially during the night to heat the water.
