Last week, I wrote “Did Trump Just Take The Lead? You Betcha.” That headline looks pretty silly now. According to several new polls, Trump’s post-convention lead has completely evaporated and become a large deficit.
That is, of course, par for the course this election cycle. If you are writing about Donald Trump at any given moment, you are probably wrong.
- CNN/ORC: Clinton, 52 percent; Trump, 43 percent
- Economist/YouGov: Clinton, 46 percent; Trump, 43 percent
- CBS News: Clinton, 47 percent; Trump, 41 percent
- Public Policy Polling: Clinton, 50 percent; Trump, 45 percent
That’s an average lead of nearly six points for Clinton. Remember, just last week, Trump had taken an average lead of nearly three points. That’s one heck of a convention bounce.
It will be interesting to see where Donald Trump goes from here after one of his worst polling shifts week-to-week since the beginning of the GOP primary.
Will he continue to spend every waking moment attacking Khizr Khan, the father of a deceased American soldier who spoke at the Democratic National Convention five days ago?
Or will he get back to what has already worked? Will he campaign on his positive, aspirational vision for a secure America with shared growth and prosperity for all?
Time will tell. I want Donald Trump to Make Donald Trump Great Again. This past week? Not so great. Believe me. Very low energy.
