I think that all Americans feel like they are losing ground in terms of their economic future. They’re working harder and harder, and they’re falling further and further behind. And Trump offers an explanation for why that’s happening. He’s saying that it’s bad trade deals and that it’s a kowtowing to immigrants who are coming into the United States and taking jobs and taking benefits. I don’t believe that’s the actual answer, but he at least is addressing the problem which is that voters feel they’re falling further and further behind.
And I think that that is a powerful message and I think that Republicans have been very clear they want somebody outside the mainstream who’s willing to blow up the system — and Trump has been that person from the beginning — and that no matter what people are saying about what his absolute limit is — it was 35 percent, then it was 45 percent, now it’s 60 percent, and now it’s whether he can beat Hillary Clinton — I don’t believe that any of those upper limits are real because I think Trump is making an argument that is connecting with voters.
